Lightning® .38 Special, 3 1/2"

SKU: CA980
Designed along the lines of the classic Colt 1877 double-action revolver with its distinctive birds head grip--the '77 Colt model was a favorite with such Old West characters as Billy the Kid, John Wesley Hardin and lady outlaws Calamity Jane and Pearl Hart. Cimarron has improved this handsome small-framed revolver by maintaining the grace and beauty of the 19th century model, but in a much more reliable and durable sixgun than the 19th century model. Colt's early ’77 double actions suffered from too many complicated and fragile internal mechanisms, but Cimarron's single-action Lightning, designed by Cimarron's founder and president Mike B. Harvey and manufactured to their superior level of finish and strength, offers the modern shooter the looks and heft of the 19th century Lightnings, with single-action simplicity and 21st century reliability. Produced in barrel lengths of 3 1/2 inches, 4 3/4 inches, 5 1/2 inches and 6 1/2 inches, in the Standard Blue and color case hardened finish, Cimarron's Lightning is available in .41 Colt, .38 Special, and a 10-shot .22 Long Rifle, depending on barrel length. Dueling Lightnings are also offered in the three shorter-barreled versions in .32-20/.32 H&R --with dual cylinders.

Recently received my Cimarron Lightning that I purchased through a gun dealer. I was going to wait until I fired it before rendering a review, but I am so impressed with quality of it I just had to comment. I am in Texas and it is late summer right now and it is pretty hot down at the range, but after seeing and holding it I am inclined to comment if only on form and quality. I have to say the workmanship on this gun is impeccable. The color case is immaculate and the blue is so deep and polished. There are absolutely no mill marks and grip to metal fit is flawless. This is the best looking handgun that I own now! When I get around to firing it more info will follow. Cylinder timing is spot on and no drag marks on cylinder. This is going to be a heirloom piece. I'm a big fan of the birdshead grip frame with my smaller hands. I also favor a shorter barrel and load the .38 special cartridge often. I was very pleased when I opened the box and saw the perfect deep bluing and case hardened finish. All metal was tight and seamless and the trigger pull is surprisingly good for a reproduction gun. I like the details like recessed chambers in the cylinder and an invisible safety built in to the base pin. Overall this is one of my favorite guns, especially when coupled with the crocodile holster that was made for it. Shooting the gun showed it dead on but a little low due to the tall front sight which was gently adjusted the old fashioned way now it splits hairs. The only thing I did not like was the cheap looking medallion inlaid on the grips so I ordered a set of checkered grips direct from Cimarron and am very pleased with them. This is a quality gun with a fit and finish that will make it a family heirloom. (Posted on 8/17/2013)
Perfect choice if you want a smaller frame and gripReview by From a female point of view

I purchased this gun for myself to carry in a shoulder holster as a conceal carry. (Not the best choice for CC, but love single action revolvers). The quality of the workmanship ranks right up there with all my other guns made by top manufacturers. The finish is flawless, and the case hardened steel has nice coloring. The trigger pull is light and smooth. I had planned to replace the grips with something fancy, but they are so beautifully finished and the color is so rich, that I've decided to leave them alone. My father loved the grip size, even with his large hands. I laid this gun next to a .22 Colt Single Action and this gun is some smaller. The grip on the Lightning is quite a bit smaller and although the frame is slightly smaller than the .22 Colt, the Lightning is a bit thicker. It will fit into the .22 holster, but with a snug fit. The gun shoots great and accurately. If you reload your own ammunition, you should know that this gun was made to high tolerances and needs good quality reloads. The ejector rod is just a bit short for getting the spent casing out. You'll need to hold the gun up, and let gravity help to unload. Other than that one very small thing, the gun is perfect in every way. This one is a keeper for life. (Posted on 12/27/2012)

Frequently Asked

Cimarron FAQs

 Are they real?

Yes, all Cimarron Firearms actually fire.

 Can anyone order from Cimarron?

Cimarron Firearms can only sell cartridge firearms to FFL licensed dealers.  To find a dealer in your area, please use our dealer locator.

Percussion firearms can be ordered directly from our website.

Can I use _____ ammunition in my Cimarron Firearms?

We recommend that you shoot only standard over the counter ammunition that meet SAMMI specification’s, http://www.saami.org/.

Shooting any ammo like +P or reloads will void the warranty on the gun.

Cimarron Firearms does not have any plans to make any gun’s that shoot +P ammunition.

What makes Cimarron Firearms different as an importer?

Cimarron Firearms worked closely with Uberti in the 80s to completely change the look and feel of the replica firearms you see offered by many companies today.  For more information on this, visit our page Why Cimarron is the Best Buy.

 Is there a minimum order?

No, we do not require a minimum to order directly from us.

Do I have to put money down to put something on backorder?

With the exception of customized guns, your firearms dealer can place something on backorder with no money down.  Keeping up with demand is one of the biggest challenges Cimarron faces.  The factories we work with simply cannot keep up with the demand for our firearms.  If you (the customer) are interested in something, have your local dealer call us or send us an email, and we will get you placed in the queue for that item.  When the gun comes in, we’ll call your dealer to see if you still want it.

How long will it take to get my gun once I order it?

This varies a lot per model, depending on the supply and demand of it.  Most items are delivered in 30 days to 6 months, depending on how many dealer orders are on file and how many firearms are on order from the factories. Special orders and customized guns can take longer.

Why is it taking so long to get my gun?

Cimarron spends a great deal of time working with the factories it partners with to try to keep up with the demand of our guns.  Unfortunately, this is not always possible.  Due to the craftsmanship and production demands placed on the factories, production schedules and, thusly, deliverables on what we have ordered, can oftentimes get delayed.

 What is Cimarron Firearms’ warranty?

Cimarron means quality and we stand behind our product.  Please visit our warranty page for more info.

Do you ship guns outside of the U.S.A.?

Unfortunately, Cimarron does not ship outside of the United States.  We can, however, ship parts, leather, and display boxes to Canada through these distributers:
