Overmountain Men and the Battle of King’s Mountain: A significant contribution came from the “Overmountain Men,” a militia force comprised of frontiersmen from the Watauga and other areas of what would become Tennessee, Virgina and the Carolinas. They played a crucial role in the Patriot victory at the Battle of King’s Mountain in October 1780, a turning point in the Southern campaign of the war.
The ‘battle in the Overmountain region” during the Revolutionary War, was the pivotal Battle of Kings Mountain, fought on October 7, 1780, where Patriot frontiersmen (the Overmountain Men) decisively defeated Loyalist militia, turning the tide in the Southern Campaign, and leading to the British downfall. The Overmountain Men, skilled hunters from the Appalachian region, used guerrilla tactics to surround and overwhelm Major Patrick Ferguson’s Loyalist forces on the mountain, resulting in heavy Loyalist casualties and capturing nearly 700 prisoners.
